Fostering Emotional Intelligence: A Parenting Workshop

All parents want their children to be happy and successful in life. But many parents don’t realize that by learning how to emotionally coach their children, they can give them a greater likelihood of dealing well with adversity, relating well to others and excelling in school. “Fostering Emotional Intelligence” is a workshop that will provide you with research-based information and tools to raise an emotionally
competent child.

This 2-hour workshop is focused on a very specific an important part of parenting – your relationship with your child – and will give you an opportunity to learn how to recognize emotions in your child and how to emotionally coach your child. Also, learn how to examine your own parenting style and how your relationship with your partner can affect your parenting.

Dr. Dan Yoshimoto, former Research Director of the Relationship Research Institute (RRI), has over 12 years of experience interviewing, observing, and analyzing relationships and working with Dr. John Gottman; founder of the RRI, international authority on relationships and author of Seven Pri ncip les for Making Marriage arriage Work and And Baby aby Makes Three . Dr. Yoshimoto is a trained and certified behavioral analyst of couples interactions and was a coprincipal investigator of a study testing the efficacy of a psycho-educational intervention intended to support fatherhood involvement.

Dr. Yoshimoto has authored and coauthored peer reviewed journal articles and chapters in the area of behavioral observation, and emotion regulation. He is a council member of the Washington State Psychological Association and member of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Yoshimoto gives lectures and workshops for clinicians and couples and has been interviewed for Jane Magazine and Men’s Health and has appeared on programs such as KOKOMO TV News and NPR.

Prepares your Child for School

Prepare your child for school and increase the chances of a stress-free transition. Parents come to our “Play-School” with their child and allow children to roam our classroom filled with educational toys while socializing with other children. Class starts off with open play where you and your child are free to choose activities, followed by “circle time” and snack time led by former executive director of The Baby Hui, Larisa Majors. Children learn to follow directions, wash hands, stand in line, how to share and take turns making them ready to learn when they get to school. Scrambling to find something for your child to do that’s fun, affordable, and is offering enough hours so you can get to and from work without leaving early or starting late? Afraid to send your child to a “stranger’s home” or mass childcare for the day?

Vim N’ Vigor and Island Monkeez, Hawaii’s only indoor air conditioned playground for children, will be offering Fun Furlough Fridays for children K-3rd grade on the Leeward side of town. For $40 your child will be in a safe, small controlled environment where positive, supportive adults will help make these Fridays fun, educational, and a time to make new friends and new memories for your child. Additional Info: A healthy mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack included in session prices. A healthy hot lunch prepared by the Vim N’Vigor Deli Café can be purchased for $5/day and includes drink. Drop-in rate is $100/day. 20% discount for siblings enrolled at same time. $35 registration fee. Unless doing the drop in rate of $100/day, registration commits payment for child for entire school year session. Beta Baby Hui Now Open to the Public

Island Monkeez is proud to donate its space to The Baby Hui. They are testing new ways to provide services more effectively and effeciently with a new Baby Hui group starting October 15. This special hui was first offered to parents on the waitlist and is now open to the public since space is still available.

Parents of newborns up to crawling babies are invited to join our next scheduled Baby Hui, which begins Thursday, October 15, 2009, from 9 a.m.–11 a.m., and meets for ten consecutive Thursdays (except Holidays). The group will meet at Island Monkeez, a children’s indoor playground and activity center located inside Vim N Vigor, in the Aiea/Pearl City area. Call 484-4787 for directions.
